Motorists across the country have received a welcome reprieve as the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced a fuel price decrease of R1.27 per litre for petrol. The adjustment, which took effect on 1 June 2025, is largely due to a combination of a stronger rand and easing global oil prices. Diesel prices have also dropped by 85 cents per litre, bringing much-needed relief to the freight and agricultural sectors.

Transport companies and taxi associations have applauded the move, citing potential reductions in fares and operational costs. Retail analysts predict that this fuel price reduction will positively impact inflation by lowering the cost of goods transport, thereby easing pressure on food and consumer product prices. However, industry experts remain cautious, warning that geopolitical instability and fluctuating oil markets could reverse the trend in coming months.
