In a significant move to bolster its digital innovation ecosystem, South Africa has unveiled the SA Tech Challenge 2025, offering a substantial R3 million prize pool to recognize and support the nation’s most impactful small, micro, and medium-sized enterprises (SMMEs) in the tech sector.

Spearheaded by the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI) in collaboration with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the competition aims to identify scalable tech solutions that can drive economic growth and position South Africa as a hub of digital entrepreneurship. The Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct at Wits University will manage the initiative, ensuring a robust platform for participants.

The challenge aligns with South Africa’s commitment to the G20 Digital Innovation Alliance (DIA) and the Startup20 working groups, providing winners with an opportunity to represent the country at the G20 DIA Summit in Cape Town from September 24 to 26, 2025. This global exposure is expected to open doors for local innovators to connect with international investors, mentors, and industry leaders.

Prizes are structured to reward excellence across various categories:

Grand Prize: R1 million

Runner-up: R750,000

Third Place: R500,000

Fourth to Sixth Places: R250,000 each

The DSTI emphasizes that this initiative is not just about financial rewards but also about fostering an environment conducive to growth, collaboration, and knowledge exchange.
