In a much-welcomed development, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced that all grant beneficiaries will receive double payments for June 2025. The move is aimed at providing additional relief to households struggling with rising living costs, high unemployment, and ongoing economic instability. According to a statement by SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi, this initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance social protection mechanisms and ensure vulnerable citizens are not left behind.

The double payments will apply to old age, disability, child support, and other social grants. The staggered payment system will continue, with payouts scheduled throughout the month to avoid congestion at collection points. SASSA also urged beneficiaries to use digital banking options where possible to ease the burden on physical branches. While welcomed by many, some economists caution that the additional fiscal burden on the state needs to be accompanied by sustainable policy reforms to avoid long-term debt escalation.
