South Africa’s billionaire landscape has welcomed a new entrant, Zak Calisto, the visionary founder and CEO of fleet management and telematics multinational Karooooo. Calisto’s direct holdings in the group have officially propelled him into dollar-billionaire status, marking a significant milestone for the country’s tech sector.

Calisto’s ascent is a compelling story of entrepreneurial spirit and strategic growth. He founded Karooooo (formerly known as Cartrack) in 2001, starting with a mere R100. The company initially focused on stolen vehicle recovery and swiftly expanded its services to include fleet management, data analytics, and business intelligence. Its global reach has been extensive, moving from South Africa into other parts of Africa, then Europe, Asia, and the Americas, with its headquarters now in Singapore.

The success of Karooooo, which listed on the JSE in 2014 and later on the Nasdaq under its current name, is attributed to its robust financial performance and Calisto’s strategic leadership. The company has reported strong double-digit subscription-revenue growth and a significant increase in earnings per share. Calisto’s substantial ownership, with a direct 64.81% stake in the company, has been the primary driver of his newfound wealth.

Calisto’s journey is particularly noteworthy as he dropped out of actuarial science to pursue a path that ultimately led to his immense success. He identified a crucial need in the market for auto theft solutions and built a multinational powerhouse from the ground up, even famously choosing the unconventional spelling “Karooooo” due to the high cost of the original “Karoo” domain name.

His entry into the elite club of South African dollar billionaires places him alongside established figures such as Johann Rupert, Nicky Oppenheimer, Koos Bekker, Patrice Motsepe, Michiel le Roux, Christoffel Wiese, and Jannie Mouton. While these individuals have largely built their fortunes in traditional sectors like luxury goods, mining, media, and finance, Calisto’s success highlights the growing potential and entrepreneurial dynamism within South Africa’s technology sector.

This latest addition to the country’s billionaires’ list signals positive economic indicators for South Africa, reflecting increasing business opportunities, particularly in innovation and technology-driven industries. Calisto’s story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that with vision and determination, significant wealth creation and economic impact are achievable even from humble beginnings.
